History of Eagle Ford Shale

The Eagle Ford Formation, also known as Eagle Ford Shale, is one of the most active shale formations in the United States. Located along the southwest Mexico-Texas boarder and extending northeast above Houston, the shale formation stretches approximately 400 miles long by 50 miles wide.  The formation has a high carbonate content and low clay content resulting in brittle clay and a prime location for horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Named after the town Eagle Ford, Texas, the first well was drilled in 2008 by Petrohawk Energy Corporation. Since then, production has been on a steady rise increasing from 100,000 barrels a day in 2011 to over 600,000 barrels per day in 2013. With over 140,000,000 barrels produced to date, Eagle Ford Shale will be producing for years to come.
